New Efficiency: Reused 3D Printer Spools

Hey All,

So as you know we are actually a giant print farm that is skimming filament off the top to make Tangled and drive the cost of good wuality 3D Printing Filament to $10. But we don't make all of our own filament. We purchase other colors and other materials and supplemental material from all kinds of suppliers. (The Megafarm is speced for 3000 machines we cannot make enough filament without help)

But the issue is that we end up with suppliers spools that we have historically had to dispose of. It is a big waste.

So based on your feedback we have decided to reuse those otherwise wasted spools for Tangled Filament.

Shipments have already started going out with the "Tangled Reused" Spools. You will know them because they will have a sticker saying "ReUsed Spool"

This is a terrible branding decision. We are literally promoting other filament with our own filament. But it is a way to save cost and waste. And that is far more important. We trust our customers to know the difference between filament we give them and another guys. And really, we know that no other manufacturer will do this, because of the branding problem. We are gonna because it is the right thing to do for our main goal.

For now, these will be integrated into the our existing orders and subscriptions. But we will work to parse them off from regular orders. That way you have consistent spool types from us if you wish.

In the new year this will also contribute to cost savings which we will pass on to you. Helping to get closer to the $10 spool of filament.

This is a great addition. It reduces our waste, reduces our cost, and should not create an inferior product for you.

Thank you everyone. Onward toward $10.

Just got latest order, two of the bag seals failed even with the foam and paper padding. Also, one of the spools was missing the sticker. It would be nice to have the tangled spools identifiable

What would really put the cherry on top of this is if you added a program where you accept empty spools from the general public. I realize this has its own challenges but please consider it.

I don't care what the spool is made of or what labels are on it so long as long as the spool: 1) Can be run in a BambuLabs AMS (This is a deal breaker!) 2) Identifies the material type 3) Identifies the filament supplier 4) ReUsed spool label is large enough to be easily identified Reused spools are totally fine with me, and I certainly feel reuse is a good thing so long as the 3 criteria above are met. A Tangled label which is placed over the original label seems perfectly reasonable. Labor costs with removal of old labels sounds like the labor would cost more than that of a new spool... so, go forth man! Anybody who raises a stink over a…

I agree with Das. Tangled certainly is not the first start-up I've supported. I am supporting Tangled because I believe in what you are trying to accomplish.

@Das Wookie

Just wondering... are you rewinding the 5KG spool onto five 1KG spools?

I think reusing spools is a GREAT decision! Personally, I prefer reused spools.

I imagine volume of filament you get from other suppliers is substantial. So much so that you can add spooling requirements into your purchase agreement. For example, any spools they send you must have easily removable labeling or any spools they send you must have a label that does not exceed Xmm x Ymm (a label with measurements that are smaller than your "Reused Spool" label).
